Before I talk about things to consider before choosing a good winter tent, keep in mind that the usage of a “winter” tent doesn’t need to be limited to winter conditions – it can be used in mild conditions as well. Just remember that although you can use your 4 season tent in the summer, many of them trap heat and don’t have the ventilation to keep you cool (unless it’s a lightweight 4 season tent).

Size Is Important

Winter campers spend lots of time inside their tents as compared to summer campers. For this reason you definitely want to buy the right size tent. There are tents made for 1 person and others made to sleep 8+. You might even think about buying a tent that is slightly bigger than what you need.

For example, if you need to sleep 3, consider buying a 4 person tent to ensure you’ll have plenty of space.

Strong Frame

Storage

At times the spawns are earlier depending on when it begins to warm up. At the first temperature increase the fish will show up.

You get your hook as near to the bottom of the tributary as possible. Many use a bobber to keep the hook just off the bottom and raise it to the face of the fish (if you can see it or by luck if you can’t). WhenIf the fish takes the hook be ready to run with it for a while since it will take off. The fish is larger than you might have believed it should be and if you aren’t lucky it will run your line, break it and be gone. An 18 pound trout can snap a ten lb. line pretty quickly unless you are ready to run with it until you can bring enough drag on the reel to wear it out.

Wisconsin has many Lake Michigan river streams that feed fine steelhead runs. The most popular streams for steelhead fishing along Lake Michigan include the Kewaunee, Root, Oconto, Manitowoc, Menominee, Milwaukee, East Twin, Peshtigo, Ahnapee, and West Twin rivers. Smaller steelhead streams include the Pigeon, Little, Pike, Menomonee, and Kinnickinnic rivers; Stony, Oak, Heins, Sauk, Whitefish Bay, Fischer, Silver, and Reibolts creeks.

The International Wildlife Museum is a private natural history museum committed to fostering your knowledge and understanding for the country’s fascinating wildlife. Started in 1988, the museum houses over 400 kinds of animals—insects to prehistoric mammals—discovered around the world.

The center features wildlife in natural surrounding, wildlife videos, interactive exhibits, guided interpretive tours, and hands-on displays.

While you were a child growing up did you want to play cowboys?  Maybe you wanted to be the bad guy instead of the hero wearing the white hat.  One of the places you certainly dreamed a little about was the Southwestern Arizona Yuma Prison.  Here the “really bad guys” were sent to serve out their time in prison. Not only were they inmates but they were also forced to build their own prison blocks!

The detention facility opened for prisoners on July 1, 1875 with seven inmates.  Those 7 had been the prisoners constructing the prison.  Now, the prison was not picky about who was there, because there were also twenty-nine female prisoners that were held at the prison.  TB was a medical problem for the prisoners, one-hundred-eleven died throughout their time at Yuma Territorial Prison.  Not somewhere that was healthy to stay under any circumstance.  The prison also was not perfect.  Throughout it’s history twenty-six prisoners escaped.  Of the 3,000 that were there over the years that may be a very low occurence but definately not one that looked good on reports or with the nearby cities.  If prisoners attempted to escape and didn’t succeed they received the horrid ball and chain to keep them from trying again.  Not a particularly comfortable way to try to walk around.

So, while you are checking out Arizona tourism offerings, think about when you dreamed that you wanted to be the bad cowboy – I bet you didn’t know all that stuff.  You probably thought that you could ride into a town on your trotting horse, knock over a bank and then ride out again and go hideout at someplace nice and clean and spend the loot.  Not so.  Normally the horses that the outlaws had were pretty skanky, no ability to feed them properly and groom them, too busy running from the law.  To knock off a bank you needed to have a pretty good plan and might very well get shot or killed.  If you were caught you were sentenced to Yuma (or hung.)  Living it up with the money, if you got away, probably wasn’t in the cards either because where could you go that there would not be questions about how a dirty trail rider got the money.  There are some that did not fit that sterotype, but probably not many.  Not the type of life you probably really wanted to live.

The prison did accomplish some good things with prisoners incarcerated there.  Quite a few of the inmates learned to read and write during their stay.  The prison actually had a small library and the inmates received health care, limited as it was at the time.  Enjoy this Arizona attraction video:

The prison was used until 1907 (for a whole thirty-one years) before it was too small, overcrowded and eventually turned over to other uses.  It has now continued life as a school; low cost lodging for transients and families who became homeless during the Great Depression. Although it wasn’t a place you would long to live in, it was certainly better than having no facility to go for shelter.  A few of the local Yuma residents thought that it was a low cost source for building supplies and so over the years some of the buildings were essentially destroyed and now are not part of the historical park today.

Today the Yuma Territorial State Historical Park is used to host several special events throughout the year including the Gathering of the Gunfighters in January which you should think about visiting.  It will be a lot of fun.  If you are there at another time of year you may want to experience one of the Haunted Tours during October.  There are always Old West re-enactments done every Sunday from October through April.
